Girl Scouts keep producing our future leaders
By Mallery Nagle When you hear the term, “Girl Scout,” it conjures up images of cookies and campfires; fun and friendship. Of course, that is part of scouting. But there is so much more. With the recent elections taking center stage for last year, the Girls Scouts of Western Oklahoma, Inc. saw an opportunity to capitalize on current events to help young participants learn what it means to be a patriot. “I realize that the schools don’t address these issues anymore,” said Cathy Stackpole, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma, Inc. “Today, schools have so much that they are responsible for teaching. So in Girl Scouts, we teach how to care for a flag and what it stands for. “I’m a real student of history,” Stackpole continued. “The founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, were so clear in their writings about what binds a democracy. People need to know their rights and responsibilities for creating a stronger citizenry. This is a participatory democracy.” [more] | Dancing with the Arts

Locally there are two Edmond Rotary clubs and dozens of civic minded people who are making a difference in the lives of many — as they give back to this community. The Rotary Club of Edmond is led this year by its president Mitzi Hancuff. [more] |
